Omaha High-Low
The Omaha High Low version is the most played version of Omaha Poker. This is partly because the high variant provides for just one winner. In cases of a high-low variant, there is a chance for a low share of the pot even if you do not have a scope for the high share and in some cases even a scoop. The complexity of playing with 4 pocket cards eventually has delivered victory many a times to the nut hand. The winners in Omaha High-Low mainly consist of the nut low or the nut high combination of numbers.
The game progresses as follows:
- Blind bets are made.
- The four face down pocket cards are dealt to each player in the table.
- The pre-flop betting takes place.
- The 3 flop cards are dealt face up in the community board.
- The flop betting round takes place.
- One Turn card is dealt face up in the community board.
- The turn betting round takes place.
- One River card is dealt face up in the community board.
- The river betting round takes place.
- The showdown.
What happens at the showdown?
At the showdown the high and the low hands are identified. The high hand gets half the share of the pot and the low hand gets half the share of the pot.
How to read the high and the low hand?
When you are reading the high hand this is lot similar to Texas Holdem. However, the final hand must comply with the 2 from pockets and 3 from board rule.
When you are reading the low hand, for instance if you have A-2-3-4-5, then this is the lowest possible low hand that you can make. Indeed the nut hand. When there is another hand in the table like A-2-3-5-6 then arrange the cards and compare the numbers in the order A = A, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4< 5 and so on. In this combination since 4 is less than 5 the hand with the 4 will win the low share of the pot.
What is eight or better?
The highest number in your low hand should not be more than 8. It can be 8. When your low hand consists of a number more than 8 then it will not qualify for the low.
The role of Ace in High-Low variant?
In a high-low game, the Ace can be used to count for the high rank and the low rank hand as well. Most of the scoop hands tend to be of Ace combination.
How is the pot split?
- The high hand gets half the pot.
- The low hand gets half the pot.
- If the same player has the high and the low hand then he scoops the pot.
- Of there are no qualifying lows, the high hand takes the whole pot.
- If there are two qualifying lows, the half pot is quartered.
- In cases where there is a high-low scoop hand and another low qualifier, the low hand gets quartered and the scoop hand gets 3/4th of the pot.
